I Made This Soap Just-For-Fun Using the New Mold I Have!
If you are a soap maker, especially in the beginning stages, you may wonder how to formulate a soap recipe for a random mold. I mean, maybe you know how to make one pound of soap that fits in the particular mold you have been using, but what if you wanted to make soap in a completely different mold?
I found out that it is a very simple formula. But before I continue, let me be sure that, of course, you know all about the dangers of using lye and the importance of wearing protective gear (goggles, gloves, long sleeves and pants, etc.) and that you know to make your lye water and your soap in a well-ventilated room with no children or pets in the room. If you did not already know this, please don't make soap until you have read up on soap making and how to do it safely. This is not a hobby (or business) to handle lightly. So having mentioned this very important caution to soap making, I will continue to share:
I didn't come up with the formula myself, but simply followed the rule I read, and it WORKED! Very simply, you need to know the cubic inches of your mold and then multiply it by .4 ! The result will equal the number of ounces you need in oil. From there, you can determine your recipe in your soap recipe calculator. I like to use http://soapcalc.net/
Recently, my mom (who is one of the biggest fans of my soap making business), gave me a new mold to play with. And so I did. My results were useful bars of soap, but they didn't look quite like I wanted them to look. However, I'm planning to "have a go of it" again soon. I think the second time around, I will nail it! This was my recipe (though I didn't follow it perfectly):

Looks like a lot of fun :) I have always wanted to make a soup on my own but still haven't ventured into it :) I make my own face and body creams though. Combining different ingredients, extracts, herbs, oils is truly inspiring and fascinating for me :)

Thank you! You have all been so kind! So, I need to look at your blog too and see if you have shared anything about your creams. I also make what I call "body butter". It IS such a useful skill. If you ever do soap, be sure to look at some soap safety videos first to understand how to do it without hurting yourself. It's serious business. But don't let that scare you. Just know what you need to do before you start!
Yep, this is the main reason I haven't tried yet. I realized I need whole new equipment for the soaps. And having a toddler running around... However, I found that some online shops sell soap base and then you can add whatever you want. Maybe I will try that first :) And I will have a closer look at your e-bay soaps ;)
I haven't posted anything about my creams on my blog (I blog mainly about psychology). I do them just for fun. I like to experiment with them. However, they do miracles to my skin. I have atopic skin, it is extremely dry and my creams (body butter) are amongst the few products that help me moistures it and control the itching :)
That's really neat. It is amazing and quite an accomplishment that you came up with a good moisturizer recipe. I am not as good at that as I am at soap making. Good job! I also totally understand what you are saying about safety and having a toddler in the house!

Hi @buysoaphere. Nice write up and loved the videos. I know a few people that make their own soap. It looks like you enjoy what you do. Ebay is a great idea. If you aren't getting much visibility, believe it or not Amazon does allow stores like this now. The only thing I don't like about selling on Ebay is you have a per-item posting fee and then pay a percentage of the sale. The sale percentage on Amazon is higher so I think it ends up being equal. Then there are programs like Auctiva which will help create templates, a storefront, advertising hints, you can run your Ebay completely through this account. I'm not sure how much it runs. I love it. It keeps everything centralized for you and easy to manage.
