How to approach the study and learning of physics as a fundamental element in science and engineering

Although the teaching-learning process involves both the teacher and the student, in this case I want to get this message through by taking a series of tips and recommendations aimed at the students.

Not all subjects are studied in the same way, which is why most students ask:

How to study physics?

The most accepted in this situation is that students address their teachers and ask how they can study physics in their homes, especially when they are alone and do not have the company and guidance of a teacher.

That preparation at home to what many students refer is looking for practical advice and different to help you when presenting your exams, and at the same time help them to prepare to pass these exams.

There is no clear and simple formula to give advice on how to study physics, because each individual adopts different positions to each learning model, but in particular I would like to offer through this publication a series of tips oriented to the study of the adopted physics to some personal experiences in the learning of the same, that in my years of high school student and university undergraduate I was very useful.

Practical tips:

  1. The first and most important thing is to maintain a positive attitude when studying physics, we must bear in mind that physics is the mother of all natural sciences, or at least I consider it in a very particular way, in this same dynamic of positive attitude is necessary that the student understands and can apply the various theoretical topics that are in each of the subjects that are the subject of study.

  2. It is important that before starting to perform an exercise the student has studied and understood the basic concepts and principles of the subject to be exercised. In order for us to understand how this point would be correctly achieved, I recommend that the student carefully read the book that contains the study material before attending a class either in the university or in secondary school. When the text is read, the points that are not clear should be written down so that they can be subsequently presented to the classroom teacher, and he can clarify them before starting the exercise session.

  3. In most physics books there is a section in each topic dedicated to analysis questions, I recommend that most of these questions be answered, and those that are not clear ask the classroom teacher.

  4. Once a physics class has started, I advise the students to take careful notes, where they go to the details in each entry, it is very important the details since these depend on the studies at home, if not recorded correctly In the classroom, we will hardly understand those notes at home. At the same time when the most important notes have already been taken, take advantage and ask the teacher about the doubts that he wrote down while studying at home.

  5. It is necessary that the student tends to reduce a bit the learning of the study material in a rote way, since a successful learning lies in the fact of being able to analyze and interpret the different theories on topics of kinematics and dynamics of a particle, work and energy, heat transfer, acoustics, electricity among other topics.

  6. The understanding of a study material is achieved when the student adopts good study habits, these habits lie in combinations of study methodologies that merge the study and analysis of physics with other classmates.

  7. It is important that the student of physics can perform a study program to daily activities in the study of physics, for this it is advisable to make sure to read the program that is given to us in the classroom the first day of class, program that we will be able to develop on the basis of programming of the given content.

Tips dedicated to the resolution of exercises

  1. I advise the student to refine their skills to solve a wide variety of problems. The student's ability to solve physics problems will be one of the characteristics that will catapult him into the valuable knowledge of the subject he is studying within physics.

  2. It would be good applied practice to solve the problems of physics, if the students can find alternative solutions to the solutions of the problems, for example: problems in mechanics can be solved using Newton's laws, although the problem can often be solved by an alternative method that resorts to energy considerations.

  3. I recommend reading the problem several times until you have enough confidence to understand what is being asked.

  4. Look up the key words that will help you interpret the problem for resolution, where it may allow you to make some assumptions.

  5. It is necessary that the student develops a capacity to interpret the questions of the exercise.

  6. I recommend writing the information given of the proposed exercise together with the necessary amounts of data for its resolution

  7. Sometimes students do not recognize the limitations of some mathematical equations or physical laws of a particular situation, that is why it is important for the student to understand and remember the assumptions that are the basis for performing an exercise. An example of this can be the case of the equations that govern the behavior of the kinematics with constant acceleration, which in turn are not valid to describe the movement whose acceleration is not constant, for example when an object connected to a spring or to the movement of an object in a fluid.

Conclusion

These tips are just some ideas that can be taken into account by many of you as students, or even recommendations that some teachers can make for their students, which can also be improved and adapted to the criteria and capabilities of each individual. another to take into account, is that although the advice is based on the study of physics, if you analyze it can be adopted to other branches such as mathematics, chemistry and other branches of the natural sciences.
