A nine-year-old girl was killed by a cobra when she was sleeping on a mattress floor in Surat Thani, Thailand on Wednesday.

The snake struck her finger while she slept alone and her family knew the unfortunate incident when she was shocked to wake up on Wednesday morning.

According to Thai media reports, Prapawee Prawat began lying on a mattress for sleep at 7.30pm Tuesday, and was found dead by her grandmother, Lung Chu, 70, when she surprised the boy the next day.

Police and rescue personnel found a reddish swelling with bite effect on the child's fingers.

They then found the two-meter snake under the mattress.

Residents beat the snake to death and the body of Prapawee was taken to the hospital for a post-mortem.

Her grandmother said: "When she wanted to surprise Prapawee from sleeping to school, she did not move, and no sign of her breathing.

"He lives with me and his parents (mother Chu) because his parents are separated.

"I do not know how it happened. We have never seen a snake in the house before. "

Major General Natakorn Meenim from Chaiburi District Police Station said the police believed Prapawee was dead about eight hours before being found

"The police received a call at 7.40am about the dead girl without any known cause.
"There is no sign of the victim being attacked or abused but there is a bite effect on the right index finger.

"The two-meter-long cobra was found in a coil under the mattress.

"The post-mortem found the kid dead by a cobra," he said.
