Current market conditions and strategies

Sensitive goods such as food and pharmaceuticals require the highest standards in shipping and handling, a standard which many logistics companies do not have the capabilities to meet. With $1.1 trillion worth of pharmaceutical products shipped worldwide annually, 26 percent or $283 billion are shipped via cold chain.
A World Health Organization report states that 40 percent of vaccines delivered globally are unfit for use in hospitals because they had degraded. This usually is as a result of poor storing, shipping and handling procedures which arises because the right hardware was not used. Even when hardware was appropriate, the goods may come under thermal pressure due to poorly regulated internal environment.
The report says that pharmaceutical companies discard products worth $2.5 billion annually due to these temperature deviations. When undetected the degraded vaccines put patients at direct risk.
This is why the European Union developed a draft policy to ensure that transportation of sensitive goods follow laid down protocols. This Goods Distribution Policy (GDP) of the EU came into effect in 2016 and applies to pharmacies in EU jurisdictions. The policy prohibits the import of degraded vaccines into EU countries.
Furthermore, with the increasing demand for fresh organic food in many parts of the world and many families desiring home deliveries, the fresh food industry has become a big market, sometimes raising concerns about food safety among supermarkets and fast food chains.

The Promise of the Smart Containers project

Though the GDP guidelines has not been applied to the entire logistics distribution chain of sensitive goods, Smart Containers has preempted the system by putting in place, a logistic distribution system that meets the highest standards for sensitive pharmaceutical and food products.
The company collaborated with scientific labs, EMPA, a Swiss based materials research institute and Fraunhofer Institute of Germany in the research, development and production of technological solutions for cold logistics chain.
The company has gone further by embracing blockchain solution in streamlining shipping documentation to make it efficient and easily accessible to all agencies involved. It is of the belief that just as blockchain is poised to disrupt many industries, that Smart Containers will be instrumental in the use of the technology to revolutionize logistics.
Speaking on the issue, Richard Ettl, the company CEO said “Smart contracts will allow logistics to decentralize and become infinitely more efficient and sustainable.” The blockchain ecosystem the company plans to build is called LOGI Chain. Its purpose is to eliminate paperwork and disconnected communication tools such as email.
Smart Containers’ SMARC token will be on sale, the ICO hopes to generate $36 million through a crowdsale for the expansion of its cold chain logistics service. It will also put on sale 100 million LOGI tokens in a second ICO. This will be used for the development of the LOGI ecosystem.
