Cooking for Love. First time baking Rozky/Rohliky

in #slovak6 years ago

Ok, so my boyfriend is Slovak and I'm a Filipina. We live in Sweden. There are times when he would be missing food from his hometown. And slovak food is pretty hard to come by here in Sweden. He says in all his 4 years here, he met only a handful of slovak or czech people. So, little miss lovable me has decided that I will try to cook all the food that he missing to the best of my abilities. I decided to start with the traditional slovak salt bread rolls called Rožky. In czech, they will be called Rohlíky. I don't really have proper measuring cups, so I just kinda wing the measurements. Note to self to go to ikea and get me some.haha But looking at the finish product, I think they turned out well enough and boyfriend is happy so I think I want to share this recipe and here it is!

Ingredients:
1 1/4 cup water
1 tsp granulated sugar
1 1/2 tsp yeast
3 1/4 cup all purpose flour
2 tsp salt
2 Tbsp unsalted butter
more flour for dusting

Instructions:

  1. Heat water until it becomes lukewarm. The rule is you should still be able to dip your finger without burning yourself. Throw in the yeast and mix. Leave it for like 5 to 10 mins for the yeast to activate.
  2. While waiting for the yeast, mix all the dry ingredient together in a bowl. Set aside.
  3. Melt the butter in the microwave.
  4. After the yeast has activated, mix it with the dry ingredients. Don't forget to mix in the butter too.
  5. Now mix the dough. And knead for at least 10 mins. If the dough becomes smooth and non sticky then that is your signal that you have done enough kneading.
  6. Let it rise for 30 to 40mins. It should be almost double its size.
  7. Divide the dough into 8 equal portions. Take a rolling pin and roll it out into triangle shapes at least 3 mm thick.
  8. Starting from the base of the triangle, roll it up towards the point. Don't forget to press outward while rolling so the dough will stick together.
  9. Layout all the formed dough over baking parchment on a baking tray. You can spray or brush them with some water before covering with cling wrap.
  10. Set them aside again for at least another 40 mins. This is the second rise.
  11. Preheat the oven at 420F / 215C.
  12. Spray the rolls again with water before putting in the oven. Bake for at least 20 mins or until they start to brown.
  13. Serve with butter and jam.

This was truly amazing, I hope you all enjoy!
