Drawing digital mask devil of yare

in #sketch6 years ago

Hello my dear Steemians, I bring you in this opportunity my most recent creation, I have drawn digitally a mask of dancing Devil of Yare. It belongs to one of the most important cultural traditions that are manifested in my country Venezuela. Its origin goes back to the XVIII century. The celebration has to do with the corpus cristi and the fight of good against evil.

This brotherhood is the oldest in the American continent and was founded by groups of African slaves who were forbidden to worship their gods of African origin.
I see it as a cultural fact that was imposed on the religion imposed by the Spanish empire, achieving to syncretize through masks and rituals their native African belief.

This religious cultural festival was declared Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in Paris on December 6, 2012.

A curious fact of this type of mask is its similarity to the masks of Asian dragons and dogs, there may be a connection, although according to the same characters who today hold the reins of this manifestation, say that the masks are allegorical masks that built their ancestors in Africa, which is known for having religions and ethnicities that use in their religious rituals as representative elements various masks.

In the step by step you can see that I chose a black background to better visualize the silhouette and make a small sketch to define the lines, then double half to make the mask and in the later strokes I dedicated myself to draw the eyes, mouth, and species of colored flames that adorn this mask.
