Let me tell you about my network...
Traffic traverses long corridors at blinding speeds. Turns are made with purposeful brilliance. Form and movement are alive with the buzzing of objects hither and tither and prodigious trajectories. Just as electrons have mastered some manner of godly blinking, the art of occupying space, disappearing and returning - so do the entities here. Each contained within their vehicle. Each in the perfect point of space at their alloted nanosecond. "Fiction!" you say? Well, read on.
All of the hustle and bustle of a major metropolis is contained herein, but without the inefficiency. If we were to look at the history of networks, we would see a progressive march beginning with ambivalent data packets oriented, more or less towards their goal. There were collisions, bottomless pits and higher-prioritized rides leapfrogging lethargic ones. When a network was down, output came to a halt. Engineers applied piecemeal improvements intended to correct symptoms and patch shortcomings. Networks were even separated by function and importance, if you can imagine. All of this of course being tantamount to a physical comparison of paper notes by human faculties.
In my city, one might be forgiven to stare dumbfounded at the neon green infrastructure before the black backdrop with seemingly nothing in a resting state. Or the fractal geometry with expressions of every possible linear dimension and color hue. The ancient masters sought to create visual stimuli from stone or paint. We have done it to perfection nearly as an afterthought. But as with all passable architecture, here the beauty is secondary to function.
The purpose of the grand roadway is to assure movement as rapidly as possible and with unfaltering precision. Structure defines pathways, thoroughfares, edges and more while protocol is the order that keeps it all in check. The great human morality which asks "Order at what cost?" does not apply in the lives of protosentient data. As yet anyway. So it's accepted among our denizens that work is to be carried out in perpetuity...
