# 1122 - Calgary Olympic Winter Games - Part 9

In 1988, Calgary, Alberta, hosted the XV Olympic Winter Games. To commemorate the event and assist in the financing, the Federal Government, through the Royal Canadian Mint, agreed to produce a series of ten sterling silver coins and one gold coin.

The ten silver coins were issued over three years, starting in 1985 and going to 1987.

All the coins were issued in Proof quality with silver purity of 92.5% and each coin weights 31.51g (1.01oz).

The ninth is the 1987 $20 "Ski-Jumping".

Its mintage was 290,954 units and the issue price was CAD $42.00.

The reverse, designed by Raymond Taylor and engraved by David Kierans, shows an athlete jumping.

Ski jumping is a winter sport in which competitors aim to achieve the longest jump after descending from a specially designed ramp on their skis. Along with jump length, competitor's style and other factors affect the final score. Ski jumping was first contested in Norway in the late 19th century, and later spread through Europe and North America in the early 20th century. Along with cross-country skiing, it constitutes the traditional group of Nordic skiing disciplines.
