Sikhism - Introudction to JAPP (The Very First Sacred Composition in Sikh Holy Book)

in #sikhism7 years ago (edited)

Introduction to Japp Ji Sahib

Japp (Sikhs call this sacred composition as Japp Ji Sahib to show their respect) is the very first sacred composition following the Mool Mantra in Sikh Holy Book.

Japp means to recite or chant or stay focus on. Complied by the Founder of Sikhism Guru Nanak, Japp instruct to recite on ੴ  (Ekk-Oung-Kaar).

Guru Nanak composed the Mool Mantra, staring with ੴ (Ekk-Oung-Kaar) and then followed by the attributes ੴ.

Then question arose how can one know more about ੴ? ( Please note Knowing by personal experience and not by gaining bookish knowledge or listening from others). If this is possible then how?

Then Guru Nanak answers "JAPP" meaning Recite (or focus on "1" as a priority in your life). Japna (reciting) starts with the mouth (tongue) then becomes part of our memory and a stage comes when it is done without any effort same way as our breathing is done automatically.

In coming days I will explain "JAPP Ji Sahib" on this blog including the introductory Salok (Verse), 38 Paurees (Hymns) one by one and then the final closing salok (verse).

i am sikh too, nice post

Mantra is represent of our mind. Sometimes we think mantra is not have a meaning, but when a wise man use mantra because there is not word how to say about it. So mantra represent of state of mind (correct me if I wrong). Nice posting :)

Right, my dear friend @happyphoenix. Mantra is a compound word.
Mann - Means Mind and Tra- Means Tool.

Hence Mantra means Mind Tool. Tool or device to bring mind into bliss and peace!!

This is an interesting idea! I don't know a lot about Sikhism, it's cool to see that there are a few Sikhs on here!

Thanks for your feedback @sir-historious. At this blog you can gain more knowledge about Sikhs and Sikhism.

ੴ? What kind of alfabet is this? Or is it a symbol?

Dear pompe72,
ੴ is not an alphabet but a combination of a digit, an alphabet and a geometric curve.

੧ is the digit "1" in Punjabi, called "EKK"

ਓ (Oung) is an alphabet from Gurmukhi (Punjabi) script.

Third part is opening curve above ਓ which is a geometric shape and is called "Kaar".

Therefore ੴ is pronounced as Ekk-Oung-Kaar. I did the following posts on all three with detail,
