Learning Music Theory

in #sight6 years ago

One goal i have is to really learn how to sight read Music. I have been learning it for years, but in 2018, i decided, it was time to get serious about it. It is a language and how you learn a language, is to immerse your self in it. Having a large collection of Songbooks, i have no shortage of learning material. I have a good Piano that I got from my Father, so last year i learned all the Major and Minor chords. How to memorize the Keyboard, is done by going over and over it. I felt that once i got it in my head, it would broaden my Musicianship. Watching interviews with people like "Paul McCartney" and "Eddie Van Halen", who talk about the fact they can't read Music, i realized that you don't "have" to read Music to be a great Musician, but if you did put the time into it, you certainly would be able to use that skill and it would come in handy understanding "Music theory" and it would open up a huge body of Music that you could play instantly. I have taken lessons in Classical Guitar over the years and learning to sight read is the first thing you do when learning it, it has the discipline and history which make it a refined Art form. So, another goal i have, aside from learning Piano, is to come up to speed sight reading Treble clef Classical and Flamenco Guitar. I play Bass guitar as well, learning the Bass clef is yet another whole study. Taking the time to studying all of this requires discipline and consistency. When you "have" to do something, you don't want to to do it, but when you have a real desire to learn it, it becomes enjoyable. Using the Brain to study Music creates new Neurones and all of the connections get intertwined.By knowing the Piano and understanding the fret boards of the Guitar and Bass, you then understand the whole spectrum of music. Having Dyslexia when i was a child, made me go into overkill mode about learning things in my Adult life. The key is learning things that i love, and Music and reading Books are my top things that i love to do. I still improvise and write songs banging out a few chords, I jam with guys each week and figure things out on the fly, I don't need to, but taking the time to learn to sight read on my own, just gives me a deeper understanding of Music and more personal satisfaction.
