Lidl Supermarket, Carmarthen, Wales
The UK's traditional 'Big 4' supermarkets (Tesco, Asda, Sainsburys and Morrisons) are increasingly being challenged for market share by the two big German owned stores of Aldi and Lidl.
Carmarthen, which is our nearest big shopping town, is fortunate to have a good selection of supermarkets to chose from including both Aldi and Lidl.
We commonly shop at both Aldi and Lidl, but Lidl usually wins as it has a customer toilet! (Not many places do these days).
Lidl, Friars Park, Carmarthen
We generally go shopping at the weekend, but we had to be in Carmarthen for another reason so this visit was on a Thursday afternoon.
Lidl is easy to find in Carmarthen, just outside the town centre almost opposite Tesco.
There is always ample parking even at the weekends.
Lidl, Carmarthen [January 2025]
The store is bright and spacious, with plenty of space between the aisles.
It has a good range of everything you would expect in a supermarket - fruit & veg, freshly baked goods, canned goods, toiletries, fresh and frozen meat and fish...
All at very good prices.

Surprisingly perhaps, Lidl also stocks a good (although rather random) range of organic products...

The Middle of Lidl
As well as having very competitive prices, Lidl is famous for its 'Middle of Lidl' range.
In its central aisles it stocks a whole range of rather random, and continually changing products that you would not necessarily expect to find in a supermarket.
These range from fleeces to sewing machines...
Middle of Lidl : Singer Sewing Machine £119.00 [January 2025]
From wellingtons to lathes...
Middle of Lidl : Parkside Lathe £49.99 [January 2025]
From fan heaters to vacuum sealers...
Middle of Lidl : Silvercrest Fan Heaters & Vacuum Sealers [January 2025]
These items rotate continuously so it is very much a case of grabbing them when you see them.
The ones we have tried have generally been of decent quality and very keenly priced.
As well as some big name brands, many of the Middle of Lidl items are from Lidl's own in-house brands of Parkside and Silvercrest.
Positives & Negatives
As well as stocking a good range at very good prices, the other big positive of Lidl for us is having a customer toilet.
Customer toilets seem to be becoming ever rarer in the UK these days, and as we have to drive for over an hour to get to Carmarthen it is a big plus for us!
Lidl Toilet - always clean and tidy [January 2025]
Perhaps the only negative of Lidl is the restricted parking time.
The car park is controlled by the dreaded Parkingeye company.
It is strictly monitored and automated. If you stay over the allowed 90 minutes you will receive a letter and a fine of £90 !
Lidl Parking : 90 minutes only [January 2025]
We have been caught out once. But luckily we kept our receipt that included the checkout time to show we had been shopping the whole time so the penalty was dropped.
If we have the time to get to Carmarthen, Lidl is definitely our go-to place for our weekly shop now.
The good range, keen prices and easy parking makes it a win all round.
Throw in the added bonuses of a clean toilet and some occasional (and affordable) organic treats and we are confirmed Lidl fans.
