"10% for kids in need" says the t-shirt 🦊🦊

in #shopping6 years ago (edited)

This actually makes me LESS likely to buy the shirt, ahahah.

I want to help the kids in need. I probably know some kids in need. (If I don't, it's easy to find some.) If I can't find some, it's easy to comb thru charities and think about which one seems best.

I don't need my charity to be tethered to my t-shirt buying.

I'd rather pay 10% less for the t-shirt, and choose myself how to help the kids. There's no reason to suspect that wherever they send the money is where I'd agree is a solid way to help.

So when I see things like this, it actually wards me off of the purchase. I know I'm just spewing value.

I wasn't gonna buy that shirt anyways, but I did like this blue dog shirt up above it:

Although now I realize the dog seems to be delivering a glass of beer. Meh, that's dumb. I'd rather it was just a dog.

But anyways, tethering the shirt to charity is kind of like using gold as money. The people who advocate using gold as money will say it's a good thing that gold also has other, commodity uses.

But no, that's a curse. That's a thing we couldn't avoid in ancient times, but now that there's an alternative, it's a curse.

All it means is you have to buy and be invested in its commodity value in order to have the money, and vice versa. It's better if the money can be the money, and the industrial commodity can be the industrial commodity.

Pretty much everything the Peter Schiff type of people will say about Bitcoin is a projection for the shortcomings of gold.

For instance, they'll say it can't be money when the value fluctuates so much. Well, obviously it fluctuates so much right now because it's 9 years old and in its infancy of price discovery. There's no reason to believe it would continue to do that as a mature asset that the world commonly uses and has had decades or centuries to understand.

When price eventually is discovered it's actually smoother than gold, because it isn't subject to swings in industrial demand or how much jewelry people want to wear etc. The fact that it's both a commodity and a money at the same time puts a ceiling on how stable it could ever be. It makes it less of an ideal money, not more of one.

You don't need your t-shirt to also be a charity, and you don't need your money to also be a thing you tie around your neck and use to manufacture computers etc.

Baha. Have a nice Thursday afternoon, my friends! 🌞🐸

This is just a sales technique, not unlike when a car commercial appeals to your sexual drive, its an unrelated claim which may tap into your desired self image.

Example, 10% of sales from this shirt go to charity, specifically kids, therefore if you like charity, or kids, and want to be perceived as charitable you may buy, if you were otherwise on the fence.

In the same way, a car commercial shows a girl looking lovingly at the male driver of this ____ car, and then you the viewer imagine that you might be made more sexually attractive if you owned the vehicle.

If the shirt company really cared about charity as a primary consideration they would just simply donate 10% without advertising it. Once you mark your shirts with your charitable donations you change your focus from charity to sales.

Right!! Definitely. Shirt is on the expensive side, but it's all about the way they want you to feel about it. And that being the case, I doubt it's even going to a good charity. Probably one of the cookie cutter charities who skim like 96% before it sees a kid, hehe.
