Embracing the Serpent, Listening to the Shaman, and Receiving a Visit! Abrazando la Serpiente, Escuchando el Chamán, y Recibiendo una Visita!

So the other night I decided to watch a movie.

I typed into google, "best spanish language movies 2015". I saw the title, "Embrace of the Serpent", and a picture of an indigenous person. I clicked on it and started to read a brief description of the film. As soon as I saw the word "shaman", I said, "Okay. This is the one."

La otra noche me decidí a ver una película .

Tecleé en Google, "mejores películas de lengua española de 2015  . Vi el título, "El abrazo de la serpiente", y una imagen de un indígena . He hecho clic en la imagen y empecé a leer una breve descripción de la película . Tan pronto como vi la palabra "chamán", dije , "Está bien . Esta es la única."

The movie is black and white,

but this draws you into the characters as opposed to the spectacle of the scenery. Although the scenery still looks beautiful without the color. The story is about an amazonian shaman during two times in his life. The movie switches between when he is younger and when he is old. 

La película es en blanco y negro,

pero esto se basa en los personajes en comparación con el espectáculo del escenario. Aunque el paisaje todavía se ve hermosa sin el color. La historia trata de un chamán amazónico durante dos veces en su vida . La película cambia entre el momento en que él es más joven y cuando él es viejo.

There are many contrasting elements in the movie.

Indigenous vs. Foreigner. Shamanic religion vs. Christianity. Preservation vs. Exploitation. Native language vs. Spanish. And in the way the main character is shown, Young vs. Old. These dynamics add to the story in a way that is very engaging. The shaman is one of the last of his kind. His family was killed. He is watching the knowledge of his people die out and the forest exploited for rubber. At certain points in the movie, the shaman is concerned that he has become a hollow soul, but his character is anything but hollow in this great film. 

Hay muchos elementos de contraste en la película.

Extranjero vs. indígena. Religión chamánica vs. el cristianismo . Preservación vs. explotación . Lengua materna vs. español . Y en el camino se muestra al personaje principal , joven vs antiguo. Estas dinámicas se suman a la historia de una manera que es muy atractivo. El chamán es uno de los últimos de su tipo. Su familia fue asesinada . Él está mirando el conocimiento de sus personas mueren y los bosques explotados para el caucho. En momentos de la película , el chamán le preocupa que se ha convertido en un alma hueca, pero su carácter es cualquier cosa menos hueco en esta gran película.

After the movie was over I decided to watch some shaman videos on YouTube

I looked for an interview with a shaman that I had watched before. Eventually I found the video again. Here are some of my favorite quotes from "Danny" an apprentice Q'ero Shaman. 

"Many people say they are looking for some healers... That's not even our philosophy. Meaning our philosophy andean. It's more like awake" "Learn from the animals. They do know how to heal themselves. They don't go to the doctor when they lick and heal their leg or something" "I want to be happy. It's a term that many people have said. But nobody says I am happy already. It is I-Want-To-Be-They want future. That's the first forgetness in our nature. We forget now.

Después de la película decidí ver algunos videos de chamán en YouTube 

Busqué una entrevista con un chamán que había visto antes. Finalmente encontré el vídeo de nuevo. Estas son algunas de mis citas favoritas de "Danny" aprendiz Q'ero Chamán.

The next morning I was woken up by my mom's voice calling me from downstairs.

"Come check out this snake on the deck!" I was still half asleep but I ran downstairs and over to the sliding doors that face the deck and my backyard. Sure enough, there was a skinny snake about two feet long lying in the crack between two boards of the deck. It was only a couple feet away from the inside of my house. Since I've never seen a snake anywhere near my house, I took this as a sign. Maybe the snake visited me because some spirits wanted to encourage me to keep doing what I'm doing. I don't know for sure, but that's what I'll believe for now....

A la mañana siguiente me despertó la voz de mi madre que me llamaba desde abajo.

"Ven ver esta serpiente en la "deck"! " Yo todavía estaba medio dormido, pero corrí escaleras abajo y corrí a
puertas corredizas que se enfrenten el jardín trasero de mi casa. Efectivamente, había una serpiente delgada de dos pies de largo situada en la grieta entre dos placas de la "deck". Fue sólo pocos pies de distancia desde el interior de mi casa. Ya que nunca he visto una serpiente en cualquier lugar cerca de mi casa , tomé esto como una señal. Tal vez la serpiente me visitó debido a que algunos espíritus querían para animarme a seguir haciendo lo que estoy haciendo. No sé a ciencia cierta, pero eso es lo que voy a creer por ahora ....
