Millennials

Millennials live in an unprecedented era, especially with the rise of social media. I for one, am a supporter of Simon Sinek speech on millennials and instant gratification. However, I believe millennials are a victim of instant gratification rather than a product of it. The birth of social media ..the digital era really pushed the instant gratification wave. Unfortunately there was no training for social media, which has caused a rise of mental disorders. Facebook, Instagram, twitter constantly have led to a revolution of social comparison where likes are the desired currency. Such desired currency has had an effect on self-esteem, value, perspectives. The revolution of the ‘like’ button has not only created a social economy but also a social hierarchy. Individuals who behold mass likes per post or a large following are perceived as a powerful digital character. This has an effect upon their desirability, attraction, finance, friendships, recognition and various other desirable elements.

Such easily attained power upon a digital character which often does not represent their real self has led to this instant gratification upon Millennials. Many individuals within that generation want their dreams to come true within the weeks, they want to be successful over night, they want to have the perfect relationship now; rather than building the foundation first, developing themselves and craft, enjoying the journey.

This instant gratification mentality is no different when pursuing a partner. The impatience within millennials easily can transfer into an anxiety feel when patience is required, that they want to skip the step; due to the feeling of unfamiliarity. This leads to us millennials sleeping together before getting to know each other. Particularly with men’s evolutionary urges to have sex. With girls being so easily accessible due to social media, men often decide to postpone getting to know one girl, and instead pursuit somebody who would meet their needs quicker. Consequently this can transcend upon girls who then decide to give in to the temptation of sex before getting to know somebody so their guy does not go elsewhere.

How much can you know somebody through social media?

Through instant messaging, many individuals can co-author their response; you have time to think about the response ..is instant messaging a natural reflection of your personality? Often the case can be stated that it is not, it is just a desire of who you want to be. Thus, how often do you really get to know someone through social media? Subsequently, individuals may talk to each other for weeks on a daily basis through instant messaging and then sleep with one another upon the first time meeting ..to realise later they do not know each other as they first thought, or one is not who they perceived they was.

Good foundation or Risky?

Building relationships upon sex and lust, when you do not really know each other can be very risky in my opinion. Lust has the potential to blind you from seeing the reality of the person. Additionally, as both genders love having sex, individuals do have the potency to prolong a damaged relationship just for the accessibility of sex, especially if it was not as easy to access before.

Furthermore, after having sex, millennials most of the time, do eventually end up getting to know each other through physical form not digital. This could be through dates, pillow talk ..anything to do with being present around each other. Only then can an individual make a judgement whether they want to be in a relationship with the other BY GETTING TO KNOW EACH OTHER THROUGH PHYSICAL EXPERIENCES. Often you will find one person will feel the other is not their type for whatever reason and then that person gets dumped after exposing their all.

So I ask ..is having sex before getting to know each other a good foundation for a relationship?
