Helping Homeless Families By Teaching Self-Sufficiency

If we want to change the world around us, often starting with ourselves is the best place to begin.

The more that we can foster self-sufficiency in our lives, in any area, the more that we can provide ourselves the freedom to take care of our own needs and enable ourselves to address any problems that we might face.

One private non-profit in Oregon, known as Family Promise of Ogden, is trying to teach self-sufficiency as a potential solution to homelessness, by helping homeless families in the community learn new skills in the hopes that it will enable them to find a better life for themselves.

For example, the group says that they look to help homeless families, specifically those who have children, meet a variety of needs that they might have, whether that be looking for a place to live or finding a job etc. They devise a personal plan that's tailored to the family specifically, working to help them get on their feet again and eventually become more self-sufficient.

The program utilizes different contributions from the community, receiving help from various churches etc, and they provide assistance with helping meet different needs that the family might have.

Whether it's helping kids with homework or helping the parents find a job if they need, they are doing meaningful work in turning lives around and the assistance given has an incredible impact on those who arguably need our help the most in the community.

All the while, they are doing this good by relying solely on voluntary donations from the community and the help of volunteers as well, to get the job done.

Homelessness has been described as a deepening crisis in the United States, with Oregon having the second highest rate of unsheltered homeless people according to a recent report just from last year. Despite the shelters that are available, there are still thousands of people sleeping on the streets and a myriad of solutions have been tested over the years, trying to address this problem and help those who are struggling. Offering those families assistance, as this group has done, in teaching them to help themselves in sustaining a certain level of self-sufficiency can and has had a meaningful impact, it might benefit them even more than a variety of other temporary assistance solutions.
