tensions are a bit high these days because there are a lot of FUD around. you can check speculation board to see a lot of these useless topics calling bitcoin dead. calling the drop to $1000 and crap like that.
and it is sometimes hard to know who is asking a genuine question and who is spreading FUD at times like this, specially if you don't choose your words carefully.

You need to check if your wallet supports the bip.
You can store your bitcoins in a local wallet on your computer which would be relatively safer. Other options would be to convert it to fiat currency or alt coins.
Yes some are buy ltc I believe.
Yes once BTC prices hit the bottom, it would be a good entry point into alt coins but i believe it would have to be a long hold.
Wish I knew the outcome. I think btc will drop a lot more before the 1st.
