Development of Tails started in 2009. The Incognito project was used as a basisect. In 2010 , the development of the Incognito OS was terminated, and at the moment, tails can be considered its heir.
For several years of development, in the OS was found and closed a lot of potential gaps, compromising anonymity of users. Given the Open source status and availability of the system source code, each release is checked for possible backdoors, which is a guarantee of the safety of the tails.

The tails are distributed as an ISO image, which can be recorded on a USB stick.
By default, the OS does not mount the hard drive of the PC, and even when booting from the USB stick does not use it to store files or other temporary data. All information is stored in RAM. This is done so that after the end of the session the work could not be determined what the user was doing on the computer, even having access to the OS media. If necessary, you can create permanent partitions in your system to save personal files, OS settings, and application updates.
