Are you the Key master?

14 people with 14 keys to the internet

So, I always wondered who holds the key(s) to the internet? Well, there are seven people who hold a physical key to a security box, and there are seven others whom possess seven back up keys. There is a smart card inside these different boxes that allow the 'device' to generate an internet master key, known as a root key-signing key (computer code), which then generates more keys that cascade down to different areas of the internet. I sourced this information from the following article inside the link below.

This is a security process that is carried out regularly (possibly every four months) to protect the internet from false web addresses being generated along with false IP adresses. The process is actually more of a security cladded ceremony, that takes place somewhere in Los Angeles, North America. There is an excellent article enclosed in the link below, where a reporter was given access to this ceremony and even better, the organisation that runs the event, streams it over the internet, which is amazing when I think about it. We use the internet daily and I never even knew about key holders before looking into it. It makes me think that Steemit's Witnesses are like key masters in a sense?

The organisation that controls the internet is called ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers), and I have enclosed a link below leading you to their website, it's very interesting.

Well, it seems that I have found the key masters and I now know that they're spread across the world for risk reduction reasons, as there cannot be too many key masters in any one country, which makes sense.

Looking back at how quickly we have jumped technologically, makes me wonder what the keys of the future will look like, the ceremony, or even the key masters themselves. If you've ever seen the film The Lawnmower man (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0104692/), then you might have an idea of how things could look in the future, with the security room being a virtual one instead of a physical room. We shall see what the future tells us.

As always, thanks for taking the time to read this post.

Thanks for your informative post. I didn't know the internet had keys. Actually, I thought it is a free network. On the other hand, some countries mess with the DNS for censoring the internet.

My pleasure @ghasemkiani and I'm glad you found it informative. I had no idea neither until I did a little research about it myself.

These two sentences: "14 people with 14 keys to the internet" and also "The organisation that controls the internet", too many people controls something too important for us.

Please, i do consider very interesting the subject you have brought to us in your post, in fact, i would like to add what i think is a valuable information.

This is issue going to be solved with the Interplanetary Protocol File System, proposed by a Stanford fellow, Juan Benet, the differences and inherent problems, besides the centralization of access and control (and we steemians know a thing or two about the benefits of decentralization):

  1. HTTP is inefficient and expensive, 2) Humanity's history is deleted daily
  2. The web's centralization limits opportunity , 4) Our apps are addicted to the backbone. You can read more about this in https://ipfs.io/

Wow!! Thank you so much for your comprehensive response and touching on the whole decentralisation of the internet. You're right that too many people control the internet and that's why I'm very interested in the alternative to the internet, which is MaidSafe. I think that this company and their vision might fit in with your core values and even a lot of other Steemit users as well. Check it out if you don't know about this already Sono.

Thanks again.

Useful information, this helps us to find out how the internet keys work.

Cheers Ana!
