Security Culture and the Lone Wolf

in #security7 years ago

Originally, I had thought about titling this post ‘Are There Advantages to Being a Lone Wolf?’. Then it hit me that being a loner or a group person is a psychological trait and not a conscious decision. If you try to adopt a trait that is not in agreement with who you intrinsically are, then chances are you’ll learn a lot about yourself but not make much progress in the direction that you really want to go.

So, if you’re a loner, what is the best way to go about practicing security culture?

First is to realize that your predilection for going it alone will affect every aspect of your life and play an important part in how you go about, not only defining what security culture is, but practicing it as well.

It will mean developing and relying on your intuition as opposed to what others think is important and prudent. It will mean becoming your own best friend and confident.

Some Tips to Develop Intuition

Become well read
There was a good reason, for those in power, why the poor were not permitted to learn how to read (or write). And why only the political and religious leaders were. Knowledge is power and without it you’re pretty much at the mercy of those who possess it.

Today, along with podcasts, audiobooks and Kindle like devices, there’s a plethora of traditional bound books about nearly every subject under the sun. Many of them would probably interest you.

Turn off the TV, disconnect from Netflix and start reading again. While on the road or under other conditions that do not cohabitate with the attention that a book demands, then make use of the audio versions.

Become acquainted with varying points of view. Investigate alternative opinions and most importantly, begin to question everything. The more you
fill your mind with different opinions, points of view and options, the more input your subconscious mind has to draw upon.

Meditation
The main goal of meditation is to quiet the mind. Conversely, it is difficult to listen to yourself when your mind is constantly rattling on about one thing or another.

There are many books, instructors, retreats and courses that offer meditation instruction. Maintain an open mind, pick one that interests you and check it out. If one doesn’t seems to be what you’re looking for, try another. And if needed, another and so on.

Besides helping to understand intuition, meditation has many other benefits, both physical and mental. And the fact that it is not part of the established ‘educational’ system should suggest that it’s worth looking into.

Begin listening to yourself
If you’re a lone wolf, you probably already talk to yourself. Now you should begin to listen to both, and especially, the other side of the conversation. Ask questions and listen to the answers that you receive.

Science tells us that all experience ‘takes place’ in consciousness. And conversely, that science is not able to explain what consciousness is. Or anything else about it, more or less.

The only important defining demarcation between knowledge and believe is experience. If you have experienced intuition then there is little that I can, or should, do to dissuade you. And if you haven’t, then all that is morally acceptable is to encourage you to experience it.

Once that you know that intuition is a reality for you then you’ll be in a position to use it to your advantage. This short post is in no position to offer all that is available for the purpose of ‘developing’ the faculty of intuition. If this interests you, perform your own due diligence, make the best decisions you can and experiment.

Going it alone is challenging but at this stage of my life I have no desire to change. I’m even of the opinion that a minimalist and mobile lone wolf has an advantage over other, more constrained, H sapiens. And I’m developing a
trusted resource that's always got my back.

I hope you can as well.

Well said. Lone wolves tend to lead the pack while the group thinkers merely follow. I think I just gave you your first vote. Do an "introduce yourself" post and let the community know more about you. (I should talk. I haven't done mine yet either) owooooo!
