Secret old underground tunnels in Manchester, walk through the past.
A few metres underneath Manchesters city centre are a well kept secret, the council say these tunnels no longer exist but these pictures prove otherwise! Some parts of the tunnels originate from the victorian era and some of them were built during WW2, there are several kilometres of tunnels underneath Manchester.
What were their uses? Many were used for transportation of goods and had canal's in them, there were also shops that used to connect to the ground level, the victorian arches section of the tunnels was converted to a air raid shelter in 1930 .
There is also a toilet which once connected to the ground level and was open for use to the public. A Lot of the tunnels have been bricked up and are still unexplored so there could be a lot more exciting things to discover, I still think what we have here is already amazing though. It's amazing to think about how the city centre would of differed back in victorian times when all of the tunnels where in full function.
