Accidents At Sea

The crude oil tanker ships spill.
The ship is the most safest means of transporting cargoes of various types and kinds in large qualities and quantities around the globe and delivered safely in different counties after battling with terrible weather, uncontrollable winds and waves, low tides, shallow waters and other sea related problems such as; piracy etc. Which can cause ship wreck that leads to loss of all her cargos, well except proper savage services is rendered in due time. After years of good sailing
experience and quality delivery service the great Liberian super crude oil tanker registered as “ SS Torrey canyon “met her end on the British territorial waters. As she tries to ensure a safe trip to “ Milford Haven in Wales”.

 The great Liberian crude oil tanker ship caused the worlds worse oil spill in the UK history. This great supertanker ships ran aground on the seven stones  reef off the coast of the united kingdom in 1967, spilling over 168 million liters of crude oil on the sea which happens to have caused the worse marine pollution. 

The first attempts to rectify the damage was the bombing of the wrecked ship with her already spilled crude oil by aircraft from the “Royal Navy” under the order of the British Government. Only smaller boats and helicopters could access the scene of the accident.

The left over crude oil was set ablaze in order to control the widely spread crude oil spill, as the ship was not a British ship, and was sailing on a straight course through the British territorial waters on to her designated destination.

This fatal accident happened hundreds of miles of the coast in Britain. France, Guernsey, Spain and about seven fishing communities were affected by the oil spill and other substances used in an effort to control damage.

Few days later on the afternoon, there was a slick of oil which was blown through the British channel’s and settled on the French coast. This lead to the death of about 25,000 seabirds and gullies as a result of this disaster fishes and shells were tainted with crude oil.

That was the bitter end of the 61,263gross tonnage crude oil tanker ship named Torrey canyon. After this accident the maritime industry took time to look into how they could reduce the risk of ship wreck so they improved the quality of the ship by building new model double hull super tankers to ensure reserved buoyancy while afloat and as safety measure in case of cracks on the hull of the ship. These double hulls vessels are safer unlike the single hull which exposes the ship, her cargoes and the lives onboard to a lot of dangers, such that in cases of collision or grounding the main hull is safe from direct contact which can cause crack and prevents water from entering the ship and causing either a partial or a total loss of lives and cargoes onboard. With this new development the risk of ship wreck has been reduced to its minimum rate. In addition to that it has been enacted by IMO International Maritime Organization that all seafarers must undergo emergency drills to keep them abreast onboard.
