Fantasy Science Fiction Golden Find - Steel World by B.V. Larson.

I'm not easily impressed by fantasy fiction, be-it magical or science-based. I wanted to make a point that I'd found a good one that to me matches the quality of Frank Herbert's Dune. It's not the same in any respects, it's not like any previous work in much detail other than the abstract ideas. Without wanting to spoil it for you or me, as I am still enjoying the audible version, it is about a young recruit who joins some kind of space marine corps. We follow the adventures of a bunch of futuristic squaddies as they travel through space and into battle. It's set in the future but not too far. It's something we can all imagine being an actual tomorrow. The galaxy is ruled by an imperial monolith which gives the ultimatum of join the union and provide a valuable asset or be destroyed. Earth, naturally, is really good at providing soldiers. I'd have suggested poetry, art, music, but that would make a boring novel. These soldiers go off on space wars paid for by richer and more popular union members. This book is everything I expected Hyperion to be, however at the use of the R word and a disliking for the author's general tone, I swapped it. Okay so it wasn't for this one but I had put it on my list. If you like science-fiction-fantasy then I'd recommend giving this a whirl.
