RE: Things you need to know about Sound

in #science7 years ago (edited)

I hope our society develops a greater appreciation for sound environments. We are aware of how humans are changing other aspects of the natural environment, removing wild places all over the world and making the remaining ones less habitable to native species. We should also think about sound pollution - obvious in cities and even suburbs where you can't escape the sounds of traffic, but sound pollution exists even in remote places. You can be 90 miles away from anothe human being on a mountain and still hear an airplane overhead. You can be in the middle of a rainforest and still hear a chainsaw. Man-made sound is everywhere.

It's been a while since I reviewed the literature but I believe it's also been shown that living near highly sound polluted places like airports significantly increases rates of heart attack. It's also been shown in multiple studies that people are less generous when they're in a noisy environment. On the other hand, sound and music can be incredibly beneficial for a variety of medical conditions like neurodegenerative diseases.
Thanks for bringing awareness to the magic and importance of sound.

And unfortunately noise pollution is our biggest problem.
