Wisconsin Tech Company Offers Chip Implants to Employees

That’s right Wisconsin tech company Three Square Market, a company that provides items for break-room or micro markets, has announced that any employee who wants can receive an implant as of August 1st; these implants will allow their employees to enter the building and purchase food at work with a scan of the hand. These rice sized chips use NFC or near field communication. NFC communication is an extension of the implantable RFID chip business, this microchip implant was made possible by a partnership with Swedish company Biohax International.

This isn’t the first company to do this though. NFC chips have already been implanted into a handful of European workplaces and; The Los Angeles Times reported that startup company Epicenter has begun a chip program earlier this year. In the US, installing them is also a form of simple biohacking. They’re essentially an extension of the chips you’d find in contactless smart cards or microchipped pets: passive devices that store small amounts of information. A Swedish rail company lets its costumers use implants instead of train tickets. 32M CEO Todd Westby attempting to warm people up to the idea of microchip implants stated that there would be “no GPS tracking at all” — because, it’s comparable to an office keycard here.

While chip implants are far from common. Westby theorizes a world where people will have chip implants inside their phones or jewelry that will hold “your passport, public transit, all purchasing opportunities." But for those of us here today reading this we will just have to wait and see.
