SEASHELLS- A case study of of bivalve (clamshell-style) and spiral (screw-shaped)
Hello friends, steemians welcome to my blog
Mollusks are invertebrate having a soft unsegmented body usually enclosed in a shell. Seashells enable them(mollusks) in resisting great pressures and to live in harsh conditions on the seabed.
Based on engineers analysis on bivalve style and spiral shaped, it is understood that the ribbing on the exterior of a shell directed stresses near hinge and outer edges.
While the spiral curving exterior directs pressure to its core and wide top.
The seashells shapes (bivalve and spiral) channeled to their strongest areas the pressure coming. The mollusk would be less likely harm in the event of damage.
Comparative stress test were ran on real shells and on simple hemispheres and cone(3-D printer) by researchers, the result shows that the natural seashell surfaces almost doubled their ability to withstand pressure incomparism to simple shapes.
"it would be both stylish and designed to protect the soft bodies inside"-Scientific American (commenting on the applications of the research)
The ability of the seashell to provide optimum protection inspired the engineers to study shape and the structure with a view of developing and designing vehicles and building that will protect its residents.
