Fun experiment for childeren! Make a match magnetic!
We all know the classic baking soda volcano, but that's a bit boring isn't it?
Here is an easy and fun experiment your child can do.
Making a match magnetic
Not many people know that when a match is lit, the reaction produces elemental iron.
Iron(III)oxide and carbon in the match react to form heat, CO2 and pure iron. This reaction takes place to first heat up the match so that the wood starts burning.
Things needed for this experiment:
2 matches
A strong magnet
An adult
Step 1
Take a match and burn the head, be careful not to burn your fingers!
Step 2
Take the burnt and unburnt match and place them in front of the magnet, you should see the burnt match being attracted and the unburnt one is not
Step 3
Safely discard the burnt match, the unburned one can still be used!
What I love about this experiment is that it's an excelent way to reinforce in anyone that both chemical reactions and magnetic phenomena take place at the atomic level, and that chemical reactions can cause a change in the atoms making up a material, as well as change thetir magnetic domains. I will definately be using this demonstration this year! Thank you for sharing!
