The launch, which will be carried out from the J. Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida, was scheduled for early Saturday and was rescheduled for early Sunday.
Parker will be the first probe to reach the solar atmosphere, known as the corona, the US Space Agency announced on its website. It will fly only 6.1 million kilometers from the solar surface, which is more than seven times closer than a ship has ever reached.
First it will go to Venus, the second planet in order of distance from the Sun after Mercury, and it will use its gravity to get as close as possible to the star. The turns around Venus will lead the probe to reach its first point of closest approach to the sun in November. Then it will perform 24 orbits for seven years, gradually bringing the ship closer and closer to the Sun.
The probe, which weighs 700 kilos, will orbit around the Sun in an elliptical path and reach a speed of about 200 kilometers per second. He will also use a combination of calculations and images to study the corona and the evolution of the solar wind.
