If we could overcome the fertility and sexual problems in space, we could potentially have humanoid children on other planets. But these little ones would not remain short in stature for long.

We experience a steady gravity of 1g constantly throughout our lives. For other planets in our solar system, this is not possible. Researchers are working on ways to make artificial gravity possible to make it easier for humans to fly long distances. According to NASA, most astronauts will grow about 2 inches in space due to the reduced gravity that causes the fluid between the spine to expand. They lose these heights within 10 days of returning to Earth's strong gravity. Because of the growth, NASA uses spacesuits with extra space to accommodate the extra height.

(You also grow taller when you sleep: When you lie in bed, gravity pushes you down and lengthens your spine so that when you wake up, you're usually about half an inch taller than the night before)

Robert Zubrin, a Mars settlement proponent, theorizes that children born on other planets with less gravity, such as Mars, which is 1/3 affected by Earth's gravity, will actually grow a few inches taller than children born on Earth. Although the genes inherited from the parents remain the same, the spine may be longer than on Earth. Fortunately, children born on Mars in a low weight environment will not have the same muscle and bone problems as long flight astronauts.

Unfortunately, if humans in a low-gravity environment want to return to Earth, the biggest problem facing galactic globetrotters will surface. They would be subjected to three times their own gravity and could also suffer serious skeletal problems. NASA scientist Al Globus cited the example of a human weighing 72.5 kilograms. If I went to a 3g planet, the equivalent of moving from Mars to Earth, then I would weigh nearly 227 kg and would have great difficulty standing up," said Globus. "It's impossible for a child who grew up on the moon or Mars to go to college on Earth.
