The older of my readers will remember that cylindrical device, with a printed scale of numbers and one of the edges with a small silver deposit containing mercury. Los más vetustos de entre mis lectores recordaréis aquel artefacto cilíndrico, con una escala de números impresa y uno de los bordes con un pequeño depósito plateado que contenía mercurio, dicho cilindro se introducía en la boca, bajo las axilas e incluso en otros agujeros bastantes más infames, para registrar nuestra temperatura corporal. Me refiero a los termómetros.

Later, due to the toxicity of mercury, thermometers stopped using this fascinating and toxic metal and became digital, but they still retained that insidious shape and the same modus operandi in the holes mentioned above. Fortunately, in recent times we have already overcome this natural barrier and for some time now the thermometer can do its job without even having to touch our skin.
