Until now, it was the monarch butterfly that fascinated us with its two-way, bird-like migration, traveling thousands of kilometers each year from its breeding grounds in North America to its hibernation sanctuaries in Mexico, an amazing journey that It can last up to two months and covers more than 4,000 kilometers.

Hasta ahora era la mariposa monarca la que nos fascinaba con su migración de dos vías, similar a las aves, recorriendo cada año miles de kilómetros desde sus zonas de reproducción en el norte de América hasta sus santuarios de hibernación en México, un alucinante viaje que puede durar hasta dos meses y abarca más de 4.000 kilómetros.

But now it seems that an international group of researchers led by the Higher Scientific Research Council (CSIC) of Spain, managed to document for the first time the transoceanic flight of the butterfly Vanessa cardui, a journey of more than 4,200 kilometers that surpasses any other record made by an insect.

The Vanessa cardui has wide and robust wings that allow it to make long flights and withstand adverse weather conditions, just like the Monarchs, these butterflies have an incredible sense of direction that allows them to navigate with precision during their migration, but it is still a trip of between five and eight days without stops.

La Vanessa cardui tiene unas alas anchas y robustas que le permiten realizar vuelos largos y soportar condiciones climáticas adversas, al igual que las Monarca estas mariposas poseen un increíble sentido de la orientación que les permite navegar con precisión durante su migración, pero aún así se trata de un viaje de entre cinco y ocho días sin escalas.

Obviously the researchers did not chase the butterflies with a drone over the Atlantic but carried out a multidisciplinary study that includes wind trajectories, genetic diversity of the butterflies studying the species from the two continents as well as DNA samples from the pollen transported by the Vanessas in their bodies.

Obviamente los investigadores no persiguieron a las mariposas con un dron sobre el atlántico sino que efectuaron un estudio multidisciplinar que incluye trayectorias de los vientos, diversidad genética de las mariposas estudiando las especies de los dos continentes así como las muestras de ADN del polen transportado por las Vanessas en sus cuerpos.

They also carried out a study of the winds since, obviously, this would be impossible without the help of favorable winds. According to experts, this butterfly could only make a flight of about eight hundred kilometers using its resources and it was thanks to the wind that have been able to perform a feat of such caliber.

También realizaron un estudio de los vientos ya que, obviamente, esto sería imposible sin la ayuda de los vientos favorables ha que, según los expertos, esta mariposa solo podría realizar un vuelo de cerca de ochocientos kilómetros utilizando sus recursos y ha sido gracias al viento que han podido realizar un proeza de tal calibre.

With all this, the researchers managed to demonstrate that these butterflies arrived in South America from West Africa, a 4,200 km flight over the Atlantic lasting between five and eight days without making any stops, which is an extraordinary feat for such a small insect and that looks so fragile and delicate.

Con todo ello los investigadores lograron demostrar que estas mariposas llegaron a Sudamérica desde el oeste de África, un vuelo de 4200 km sobre el Atlántico de entre cinco y ocho días de sin realizar ninguna parada, lo que supone una proeza extraordinaria para un insecto tan pequeño y que tiene un aspecto tan frágil y delicado.
