Well, to be fair, even before this theory ultimate fate of our universe was said to be "heat death", e.g. the state of maximal entropy. So I don't think it can be much worse now :)

      We might find a way to jump into one of those parallel universes Hawking is talking about. We also might die out long before then, takes just one idiot with big red button, and we have a whole lot of them at this point of our history. We'll see :)
