The New 53 Qubit Quantum Computer From IBM

in #science5 years ago

The new quantum miracle from IBM has 53 qubits. It will be available for customers from October and it will allow them to solve extremely complex problems such as quantum simulations of molecular systems.

IBM is serious when it comes to quantum computers. In the past days, they announced their 14th quantum computer. Very soon, in October, it will be available for customers. This computer has the computational power of 53 qubits. This is a huge leap compared to the IBM Q System One which is available since January 2018 and has only 20 qubits available.

Classical computers use bits – information stored as ones or zeroes. Quantum computers use a much more complex system. Not only can qubits be ones and zeroes but many numbers in between and even all at once. This makes them much more powerful in a certain task then classical computers.

Dario Gil – the chief of IBM Research says that their new quantum systém with 53 brings its users the chance to perform even more complex calculations and experiments. The goal is to use the so-called „Quantum Advantage“. This is the ability to create powerful quantum systems that can be awesome at solving problems that current systems struggle with.

Quantum systems can process data much faster compared to classical computers because qubits are much more effective carriers of information. That means that can easily work with large quantities of data and this more easily solve big problems.

One of the first clients for the new 53 qubits quantum computer is Mitsubishi Chemical. They are researching the reaction between air and lithium in lithium-air batteries. These may one day be a breakthrough battery technology.

Whenever you need to solve a large complex problem with many variables and possibilities that need to be considered all at once then you have a job for a quantum computer.

Yeah, but can it run Linux? ;)
