Robots Made From Ice

in #science4 years ago

Experts from the University of Pennsylvania are trying to figure out whether we could one day send robots made from ice to other planets.

The main goal of this interesting project is to create a robot capable of using local resources to repair itself in case it gets damaged. And perhaps the robot should be capable of “replicating” itself.

From what we learned during a presentation at the International Conference on Intelligent Robots and system the scientists researched different ways how to create such a device using additive and subtractive processes.

As you might have guessed that the robot isn’t fully made from ice. Only its main structural components. Otherwise normal pieces and batteries are being used.

Devin Carrol – one of the researchers – says that similar robots could also find their place while doing research in Antarctica, the Arctic, and other places full of ice.
