Gravity plays a very crucial role in the stability of all planetary bodies. Earth is kept in its orbit because of the pull of the moon and of course that of the sun. Gravity is strongest in the polar regions of the earth while they are least at the equator. This accounts for the reason the earth is not a perfect sphere.
