Scientists Discovered a Double Heavy Particle at LHC
Scientists at the Large Hadron Collider have discovered a new heavy particle that can give more insight about the so-called strong force that holds nuclei together.
The existence of heavy particles had been predicted before, but this is the first time that they have been discovered. The new particle is called Xi-cc++, and the details of this discovery were presented at a high-energy physics conference in Venice.
Quarks have six different types and the particles that have been detected so far contain at most one heavy quark. This is the first time that scientists have discovered a particle with two heavy quarks. The two heavy quarks are expected to act like a binary star system. The light quark orbits this double system. The new particle has two positive charges and is four times heavier than a proton.
