Glowing with billions of stars.
Only now are we begin to learn a lot more about our own galaxy, previously it was obscured by too much gass, dust etc. and simple intervening material - due to our side on view. That is all changing now that we have instruments that can peer through the obscurity using a wide range of frequencies and methods.
