The Collatz Conjecture
Hey there,
A post on the Collatz Conjecture.
The problem is very basic in itself but Paul Erdos himself said that mathematics are not yet ready for such problems when asked about the conjecture, which shows you how tough of a problem it is.
You might also know this problem by the name the Syracuse conjecture, you start of with any integer greater or equal to 1, if it's even you divide it by 2 and repeat the process with the new number, if it's odd, you multiply it by 3 and add 1 to it, the Collatz conjecture states that you will, at a certain point, reach the sequence 4,2,1,4,2,1...
This is still unproven and a great exemple that a simple question doesn't necessarily have a simple answer !
Here's a visualization of the numbers with an orbit length of 19 or less ( the length of the sequence that leads to 1)
