Comparisons between Humans and Chimpanzees
Hey just wanted to write few similarities between humans and chimpanzees. How evolution made us different. It's very exciting.
- Ok, so let's start by everybody calling chimps monkeys, but they are actually apes. So are we. We are just different species of apes (Homo Sapines). You know you are in homo sapiens species because you can produce a fertile children. Chimps are actually two species: Pan Troglodyets ( common chimpanzee) and Pan Panisuc (bonobos). Humans and both of chimp species evolved from common ancestor.
- DNA : It's ofted said that humans and chimps share 99% of DNA. But our better estimate is somewhere between 85% and 95%.
Most of this DNA is used for basic cellural functions. Chimp have 48 chromosomes which is two more than humans. It is thought that in our ancestor two pair of chromosomes fused into single pair. (cca. 100 000 years ago)
- Brain size: Volume of chimp brain is around 370 mL, and humans have 1350mL. Brain alone is not only indicator of intelligence. There have been Nobel Prize winners with brains ranging from below 900mL all the way up to over 2000mL.
It's structure and organization on various parts of the brain that make intelligence
- Sex : Bonobos are known to enjoy sex like humans. Common chimpanzees can become violent and angry but bonobos refuse to do so. Common chimps also do not engage in recreational sex.
- Tool use: People considered that they are only animals using tools, but in 1960 observation of chimps using sharp twigs to fish for termites changed this. Chimpanzees can make spears, use stones as hammers and mash leaves into a pulp to use as makeshift sponges. It is because we walk upright we had more freer front limbs to use tools.
- Language and Facial Expressions: Chimpanzees have complex greetings and communications which depend on the social statuses of the communicating chimps. Many of their facial expressions surprise, grinning, pleading, comforting are the same as those of humans.
