Canadian Hospital Launches First Medical 3D Printing Program of Its Kind

in #science8 years ago

A hospital that's located in Canada, The Ottawa Hospital, has recently launched the first medical 3D printing program of its kind and it's going to use 3D printing in order to produce prosthetic limbs for consumers. By using this method of production for the prosthetic limbs, it's going to make them both more affordable and allow for unique personalization of the limb.

The chief of medical imaging for the hospital, Dr. Frank Rybicki, says that the new program is going to really help to bring the very best ideas to the patients.

Help and treatment for patients is only going to get better with the assistance of 3D printing technology. And this isn't the first hospital or medical setting to try and employ this technology in the same way. Although, 3D printing is also being put to use in a myriad of other creative ways within the market. This technology has been greatly changing the lives of many people around the world, by offering them unique and economical prosthetic options.

The medical 3D printing program that has been launched at The Ottawa Hospital is the first of its kind to be initiated within a Canadian hospital and the program involves a partnership with the University of Ottawa. This option is also remarkably cheaper than traditional alternatives, whereas it would usually cost thousands of dollars, the 3D printed option is only hundreds.

The hospital's printer allegedly cost them around $400,000 and it's going to really play a big role in changing the lives of many.

According to recent market research, it's estimated hat the global 3D printing market could grow to about 30 billion or more by 2022. This technology is already being used in many spaces in the market, from Aerospace design to food production, healthcare, and more.

Very cool. With all the new materials coming into the 3D printing world this will have huge implications... especially for the biotech space. Excited to follow this as it develops. Thanks for sharing!

Canada seems to be lacking in forward thinking on automation. Glad to see there is investment being made in this type of work. Re-steemed for good Canadian content! Thanks for sharing
