Botched Staycation - Leave Your Own Botched Vacation Stories In The Comments. (NOTE: NOT SCIENCE - Phone Post Error Won't Let Me Change)
Edit: I posted this on my phone - as will be obvious - early this mornong and i think it placed the post in #science by accident. Not sure what that's about. Now it won't let me change it.
Even a botched staycation has its benefits in Manhattan.
It's 6:30AM on a Sunday and I'm supposed to be sleeping in a luxurious hotel. Instead my wife and I are laying on a bench in Madison Square Park.
Something has gone wrong.
My wife and I had two free days worth of Hyatt points.
But they were going to expire in a week. So we decided to use them for a "staycation." This was a good idea because we can "staycate" in NYC at the nicest Hyatt's around.
So we book a free night, last night, at this real nice hotel. Make plans to wake up early and go do tourist stuff we would never normally do.
Check in late - go to bed. Super awesome room - super view, super bed. Lap of luxury.
11pm - just before I get to sleep - fire alarm goes off. Just for a minute. Then it stops. Starts again. Stops. Starts again.
Go to check the elevators. An announcement comes on and the announcer's voice is filled with the most transparent panic:
"Uh... we are having an... uh... emergency alarm... firemen are ...uh... on the scene. At this point...um...well...there's no need to...uh...pa...well...evacuate"
I press the elevator button - they're no longer running.
We evacuate.
Walk down 28 flights of stairs. Wait awhile in the lobby. False alarm.
Ok, fine. Head back up. Back in bed. Get to sleep.
4:50 in the morning. The alarm goes off again. We're dubious. Similar levels if panic in his voice:
Announcement: "Emergency personel are in the building. Repeat, emergency personel are in the building. Stand by for further instructions."
Elevators stop running.
We evacuate. 28 more flights of stairs.
By the time the fire department leaves the sun is coming up. There's a bunch of different explanations - none of them the same - "but don't worry about it, we've just disconnected all the fire alarms."
The hell with it.
We check out and walk around and that's how you find yourself in Madison Square Park at 6:30AM waiting for Eately to open. That's also how you find yourself being accosted by a crazy guy wearing a Kermit The Frog members only jacket outside Grand Central Station. What a city.
All and all not the worst botching I've ever botched, not by a long shot. We've all got these stories - leave yours in the comments and lets compare notes.
