what would happen if the earth had two suns?

in #science4 years ago (edited)

If you ever saw one of the Star Wars movies you will know that on Tatooine the planet of the skywalkers, there are two suns and it is a binary solar system. Today I thought of talking to you about that, I'll talk to you about binary systems and what would happen to our solar system and even more importantly what would happen to us if we had two suns.

Attention: this is just what I think would happen, I don't work at NASA or anything like that, I just want to see if this material appeals to you.

Well. Of first instance. What is a binary system? A binary system, is a phenomenon in which a planet or star orbits around another planet or star thus forming an elliptical orbit which in time will move through the cosmos by the effect of gravity produced by both celestial bodies.

Leaving that aside, I will explain what would happen to planet Earth and other planets in our solar system, in the hypothetical case that we had a second sun. To make it easier to understand I will explain in phases what would happen with our solar system progressively

  • Venus and mercury would be the most affected since they would disappear the instant a sun of approximately the same mass as ours would orbit our mother star. The temperature of the earth would be compromised and would increase and possibly get closer to the sun as it would be smaller than the suns.

  • Our solar system would begin to have elliptical orbits that would change as more time passed. The changing orbits would cause the planets to get too close to the suns and then they would heat up to be almost as hot as the two stars. In our case, the poles will melt faster as they get closer to the satellites orbiting them, causing floods and other disasters.

  • Every time a planet passes by the suns, it will be quickly sent into the void of space and by the attraction of the stars it will be attracted back, but by being sent again, the planets will be shot further and further away, causing them to get lost in space for lack of gravitational attraction by the stars. It is also possible that they will collide with the stars.

  • The fusion of the suns is possible because at some point one of them will attract mass from the other star and once it consumes all its matter the stars will unite forming a bigger and brighter sun.
