My 2018 High School Science Fair Experiment! --==!EIGHT HOURS of data collection today!==--steemCreated with Sketch.

in #science7 years ago

Today I finally stopped putting it off and started my science fair experiment for the 2018 STEM fair! I worked today for EIGHT grueling hours and managed to collect twenty data points despite multiple errors in testing (mainly brain-farts as I was getting tired) As follows is the procedure I used today collecting data for pullout force. Not quite sure how I'm going to cast my hypothesis yet or incorporate my results but its all a big work in progress. :)

1.) CAREFULLY cut testing wood into 4x4 squares inches. (all wood was 1&1/2 inches thick)

2.) Drill a 9/32 hole centered in a (each) board.

3.)Start threading the 3/8-16 Hangar bolt into the pre-drilled hole. 20180113_151410.jpg
4.) Finish up threading with a drill. 20180113_151944.jpg20180113_152004.jpg
5.) Take a pre-trail reading on the load cell. 20180113_152203.jpg
6.) Insert the board-bolt complex and use washers to span the gap to the other side of the instrument. Finish up by hand tightening the nut until a small amount of pressure is seen on the digital readout of the cell. 20180113_152355.jpg20180113_152610.jpg20180113_152431.jpg20180113_152725.jpg
7.) TIME FOR THE BIG GUNS! tighten that junk until the wood fails (from what i've seen either the threads strip or the wood splits.)20180113_152834.jpg
8.) take a post tiral reading using the "peak" (maximum tension the wood was able to withstand.) 20180113_185849.jpg
9.) Remove the bolt the repeat.

PSA: ALL READINGS ARE IN AMERICAN POUNDS

Again not quite sure what to do with the results but today was mainly for number crunching and I left the workshop so exhausted when I was done I even forgot to snap a picture of the finished data sheet. It was a super long day and i'm also ridiculously sore from swimming practice. Anyway, LET ME KNOW if you as a community are interested in me uploading a steem version of the ENTIRE PROJECT, including graphs, research, and analysis when its all said and done. What about a site wide science fair of our own? Here's a cool picture from my snap story that shows today's work including a block or maple that held OVER 4,000 POUNDS!!! Snapchat-1769803617.jpg
