Stephen Hawking Died - May His Soul Rest In Peace

in #science7 years ago

Stephen Hawking, died today in morning at his home in Cambridge at the age of 76.

The British physicist, one of the most prestigious names in science and the best-known scientist in the world, brought a new look into black holes, never ceasing to wonder about the origin of the Universe.

At the same time that it provoked, with humor and intellect, what we knew about the cosmos challenged the very limits of human life.

At age 21, he was told that he suffered from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and that he would have two years to live.

The disease gradually affected him, to the point that he could barely move his finger and blink his eyes, but the physicist feigned the pessimistic diagnosis: with the help of a wheelchair and a voice synthesizer, he overcame almost five decades the lifespan it was given - without ever giving up participating in the scientific community.

Unable to use his vocal chords, Stephen Hawking continued to be heard.

A distinctive feature was the sound of his robotic voice, produced by a voice synthesizer; letters or words appeared on the screen of the computer integrated in the wheelchair, and Hawking chose what he meant by means of a subtle movement of the muscles of his cheeks.

The physical limitations did not stop his adventurous spirit. He traveled the world (even went to the Antarctic), spreading knowledge in his passage, but he did not stick to his feet: when he turned 60, he decided to celebrate them in a hot air balloon; after five years, participated in a zero gravity flight.

A few minutes before the trip, the scientist said he was enthusiastic about being able to "float freely in space" after so much time "confined to a wheelchair."

Time Traveler

The British argued that time travel is theoretically possible, and did not rule out the possibility of a cataclysm coming, "sooner or later," to cleanse humanity from the face of the Earth - whether it was a nuclear war, a virus or "Other dangers in which we have not even thought yet." That was why he considered it imperative that we launch into space as soon as possible - but for that, we needed to know it.

He threw a welcome reception for future time travelers but didn’t let anyone know about it until the day after. So time travelers from the future would be able to see the invitation, which offered the exact location and time, and they could travel back in time to attend the party.

Hawking was a pretty well-regarded guy, and he probably wasn't used to having nobody show up to his parties.

But even still, the party was empty. “What a shame,” he joked in his documentary. “I was hoping a future Miss Universe was going to step through the door.” So he concluded that time travel, at least from the future to the past, was impossible.
