Honda Officially Retired Asimo Robot

in #science6 years ago

Honda has announced that they are halting the development of its iconic humanoid robot, Asimo. Furthermore, Honda will focus on using the technology used to build Asimo in other products.

Asimo which stands for Advanced Step in Innovative Mobility turns out to be older than me. Honda began to develop Asimo in the 1980s and was introduced to the public in 2000.

Asimo is the first robot that can walk on two legs. It can perform some simple actions such as recognizing moving objects, determining distance and direction of objects, understanding voice commands and human movement, and being able to navigate independently thanks to the sensors in the body.

The very famous Asimo often shows his ability on television shows. Also often interact with world figures, such as when Asimo playing football with Barack Obama.

Honda itself will continue to develop its humanoid robot, but may not use the name Asimo. Honda also ensured that its robot development team would still be active.

When asked by @ black.panther, representatives from Honda said that Asimo will not be fully retired. "Away from retirement, Asimo will continue to perform throughout the US to inspire young people and encourage them to choose careers at STEM".

For Honda's own robotics program, they have just announced four concept robots at the 2018 CES event. The four robots consist of a companion robot, an autonomous off-road vehicle, and two concept robots to help mobility that all come with a cute and adorable look.
