Cool !!! The Cheetah Robot Can Run Fast Without Looking

Chipmakers like Nvidia and Qualcomm are busy making visual intelligence technology for robots. But in some scenarios, it may be better for robots to rely on other capabilities to navigate their surroundings.

Because of this the latest version of the cheetah made by the Norwegian Institute of Technology (MIT) cheetah, Cheetah 3, is designed to move in rocky areas and through obstacles without relying on vision. Yes, this robot is made unable to see.

"The vision on the robot may be less clear, less accurate, and sometimes unavailable.If you are too dependent on vision, the robot you create must be in an accurate position, which will cause the robot to slow. So we want this robot to be more dependent on the touch information, so that it can overcome unexpected challenges even if it moves quickly," The Robot Designer (MIT Professor), Kim Sangbae

The Cheetah 3 robot relies on two algorithms namely the contact detection algorithm and the predictive control-model algorithm.

A contact-detection angronitma helps the robot determine when it should lift its legs and when to stand. The algorithm uses data from the gyroscopes, accelometer and position of the Cheetah 3 foot joints.

Sangbae Kim and his team tested this algorithm by putting Cheetah 3 on the treadmill and sending it up and down the challenged ladder as blocked by wooden blocks.

While model-predictive control algorithm is useful to estimate how much power must be spent by the legs when the robot will step. The algorithm is tried by kicking and pushing the robot while it is running on a treadmill. That makes Cheetah 3 produce power to keep its balance.

According to MIT, the robot will be useful for carrying out missions in dangerous and inaccessible areas, such as to explore disaster zones.

Although the robot is designed to use "blind driving force," the research team of this robot has equipped the Cheetah 3 with a camera to allow the robot to deliver visual results from its surroundings. The robot will be on display next October at the Intelligent Robot International Conference in Madrid, Spain.
