Good piece and summary. I disagree with the idea that governments don't regulate fructose because it doesn't make you high. I think government would love to regulate (and tax!) fructose if at all possible. However, corn subsidies are entrenched and consumer sided regulation (tax on soda, not allowing soda to be purchased with government food benefits) has really had a hard time going up against industry.

Well, apparently, that's the only reason they don't, at least according to the lecture. That said, there are lobbyists in every government, so I am sure it wouldn't be so easy to change even if they wanted to.

To me, it is kind of like legalization of guns in America. The place is a goddamn wild west of the 21st century with people carrying guns and shooting each other nearly every day, but the "freedom" to possess guns is not going away any time soon. It is too big a business now.
