The Power Of Senses
Senses: How We Connect With the World
You know what’s happening about the world around you because you have senses and that is your sense of touch, smell, taste, hearing and sight which are the main senses. There are also internal senses that tells you what is happening inside your body that is for example is when you are hungry, thirsty, tired or in pain. Most of our external sense organs are in our head such as the eyes, nose, ears and tongue. Your sense of touch is located in your skin.
Each of these organs responds to the changes in your surrounding which is called stimuli. A stimulus could be a change in light, sound or food flavor. Stimulus will send the signal to the brain then the brain sorts out these signals into something we become aware of and understand, such as the sight, sound or the taste. The information provided by the senses through our brain helps us protect ourselves and enjoy the world of sight, sound, flavor and smell.
Our body’s sense organs constantly send signal about what’s happening outside and inside of our body thru the body’s control system which is the brain. The parts of these organs that receive information are called receptor cells. Each receptor cell responds to a particular stimulus such as bright light, a hot object or a high pitched sound.
The brain is able to control the body because it is linked with the receptor cells all over the body by a network of long thin cells that carry electrical signals called neurons in which these signals are called nerve impulses. Neurons are tide-up together into the nerve like electric cables then the nerve relay nerve impulses between the brain and all the parts of the body.
So basically, these senses are very important to our lives. This is like an input device to the human body. Can you picture out life without these input devices? We are nothing without these spine-tingling senses!
