Solar Impact is a Swiss solar energy company focused on creating environmentally neutral energy sources, and applying them in useful ways. While perhaps not the most practical appliance, Solar Impact’s new Ocean-going, solar-powered yacht concept is certainly an impressive innovation.
The 23.9-meter aluminum yacht is different from your typical ocean-going vessels in a number of key features it boasts. The Solar Impact yacht, first and foremost, will derive its energy primarily from the sun. It will navigate the ocean with less noise than a Prius, and by decoupling from the ocean’s wavy surface, the design promises 90% less rolling and heeling — that means a super smooth ride. Designed by Marlena Ratajska and built by Schaaf Yachtbau GmbH & Co KG, the yacht is powered by two 500 kW engines and an 800 kWh battery. A max speed of 22 knots makes this solar yacht ocean-ready.
