There are 12 areas, sometimes called Vile Vortices, scattered all throughout the world with the most famous being The Bermuda Triangle. As such, it’s only fitting that it be used as the example here.

Now, why exactly is The Bermuda Triangle such a huge mystery? Well, for starters, it is a place attributed to plenty of disappearances throughout the years. While some are a bit exaggerated, many popularized disappearances occur in this triangular area located southwest of Bermuda and extending to southern Florida and Puerto Rico.

Leaving aside supernatural explanations such as effects from the lost continent of Atlantis and UFOs, natural explanations include compass variations, the relatively fast flow of water in the Gulf Stream which can carry ships and downed aircraft long distances, weather, and of course, navigation errors. Studies have concluded that the risk of transiting the Bermuda Triangle is not statistically higher than other areas, and curiously enough, the insurance company Lloyd’s of London does not charge higher insurance rates for shippers operating in this area compared to similar areas. Perhaps the biggest mystery is why the Bermuda Triangle attracts a disproportionate share of public attention compared to the other Vile Vortices.
