CASE STUDY: Rankings Boost From Schema?

For as long as I’ve been doing SEO, one of the best ways to boost a sites rankings to the first page of Google was to get a bunch of back links from other sites. But over time as Google has released various updates to their ranking algorithm and one had to be more mindful of the quality, type, relevance, velocity and anchor text profile used.

Quality become a new standard over quantity which led many SEO’s to start building Private Blog Networks or PBN’s for short. This led to the PBN craze and of course the market that served the industry.

Thousands of people started buying or scraping expired domains, and offering them for sale to use in a PBN. While some built PBN’s for personal use, others were building PBN’s and renting links on them. The market place exploded…because quite frankly PBN’s work and sellers were making a ton of #money.

However in the past couple years Google also quietly started implementing a new way to categorize and understand what a site was about using a new language called Schema Markup as part of the Semantic Web project.

This new ‘code’ that you can insert into the HTML of your page helped Google to quickly and easily understand what a site was about, and what other sites were actually related to it. Schema has quicly evolved to a javascript based code which is already the 2nd generation of this mark up language which started as Microdata but evolved into JSON-LD.

The benefit to inserting Schema properly was an often-instant boost in your rankings over other sites that didn’t utilize this strategy. And I’m talking about ranking boosts often bigger and faster than you could get with a strong group of PBN links which are far more expensive, and time consuming to learn, build and maintain.
However, Schema became so big so fast that it quickly became hard to understand, and harder to implement properly.

But of course those in the know quickly started developing tools to make this process much easier to take advantage of. And thankfully, I was one of them!

I teamed up with @ToddSpears, a brilliant SEO and coder with his own development team, to develop a state of the art plugin that not only made it easy to inject this Schema into websites by simply filling out a few forms and clicking on submit, but also to include a whole slew of other time saving features that all work within the plugin to make planning, building and ranking sites much easier and faster.

These next few pages will illustrate one solid example of how easy it was to insert schema onto a site, and how quickly and dominantly this tactic was able to take a stubborn site from Page 3 to Page 1 in just a few weeks time, with only about 1 minute of work.

This is an Exact Match Domain (EMD) site that I built using the “Rank & Rent Guide” principles taught in the guide. The site got “stuck” in the mid 30’s on page 4, and because my business was growing so fast, I left the site behind as kind of an unfinished product.

However, once the Project Supremacy plugin was completed, we needed beta test sites to see how well we had done, and this site was the perfect candidate! So the only difference to the Rank & Rent strategy was that we installed Project Supremacy v2 on the site and something amazing happened that we were really hoping for!

Project Supremacy was installed on this site on Dec 11th, 2015 and the schema portion of the plugin was all that was filled out. I didn’t have a phone number for a business yet, as the site wasn’t yet ready to rent out to a business, so I left it blank and filled out the rest as you can see in the image below.

It really is as simply as filling in the forms and hitting save ;)

Next I left all the social profiles blank, as I didn’t actually have any for this site. But I wanted to note this for later on in this case study how POWERFUL those become with Schema.

Next for the address of the site, I simply filled out the city and province (city, state), because I didn’t yet have this site rented out to a local business, so there was no real address associated.

And finally, I used the handy Schema Validator to make sure everything was going to be ok in Google’s eyes! I hit the RUN VALIDATION TEST BUTTON, and I got the green check mark, that my Schema was detected and valid.

And that’s all I did. It took my literally 60 seconds or less of work.

Well I knew Schema was a big deal, but when I woke up and checked the stats the next day, I was completely dumbfounded at what I saw. Not even 24 hours after installing schema, the site had a HUGE jump from #36 to #19, where it was almost stagnant for weeks before!

But the amazement didn’t end there…check out a few days later. Another bump from #19 to #15! Amazing right? I still hadn’t touched anything on the site…just the schema.

Well the site did slide back a little bit a few days later, but then THIS happened… ANOTHER huge boost, but this time to PAGE 1 of Google!

But I wasn’t the only one seeing these amazing results! Our beta testing group started reporting their results and they were just as outstanding as my own! JSON-LD schema was a major HIT!

But then came in the grand daddy testimonial of them all.

It was from a guy name Denker Sage who first sent in his testimonial, but later updated it.

Now if you read that testimonial carefully, what happened here was the following.

• Ranked a brand new EMD site on Page 2, #13, #16 & #17 for multiple keywords in 3 days.
• Hit #1 in Google Maps above established companies with ratings.
• Social Profiles are also on Page 1 & 2.

What that means if you are paying attention here, is that Denker had MULTIPLE PAGE 1 Listings In Google for a brand new site in less than a month. That's MASSIVE PROOF!

1. He ranked NATURALLY
2. He ranked IN MAPS
3. He ranked his marked up SOCIAL PROFILES

Now that the Project Supremacy SEO & Schema Plugin has been around for awhile there's been countless other examples of solid proof that adding Schema to a local business website can increase it's rankings very powerfully and very quickly.

For my next post, I'll show another case study where we were able to get the Star Ratings showing up in Google in just a few days from only second of work using the plugin as well!
